Hey Hey All!
I suppose I'll get the ball rolling. Here is my proposal paragraph for the narrative assignment. I'm pretty alright with receiving feedback so don't worry about being too critical, I'd rather hear it from you than from Derek
.
For my narrative paper I am going to tell a fictionalized version of a few experiences I had and stories I heard while backpacking, hitch hiking and traveling as a teenager. During that time I experienced many new things as an outsider or initiate into a subculture which was new and very exciting to me. As a result, I am going to use a first person narrative voice so I can limit the knowledge of the narrator and present the reader with the most effective perspective. The narrative will begin jumping straight into a lead up to the climax and centers around two main characters that have recently become fast friends and decide to hop a train westbound out of Halifax. The pair are hiding in a wooded area near a “siding” or “crew change” and hope to expertly dodge “the bull” (a railroad cop) as he checks the train they have been riding for misfits and hobos. While the two lie in wait to see if they can successfully evade capture they relive various events of the summer. One character has just hitch hiked across Newfoundland only to kiss the wrong girl was chased out of town. The two meet while busking on a busy bar street and have a run in with the local street folk. I will use the main character’s internal voice to give flashbacks to these events and provide action beats, build the relationship between the traveling partners and give a glimpse of their individual desires and reasons for making the perilous journey our west. The story will end with the pair rushing back to the train which has resumed its westbound course. The climax of the narrative comes as the two are re-boarding and are nearly spotted by “the bull” but narrowly avoid detection and head off toward their respective goals.
Thanks for the read and any feedback you have. Have a good weekend everyone!
