Revision
- "it's not just hard, it's time consuming."
- very important
- the real writing takes place during revision
- make sure to organize your time to ensure there's time for revision.

Most Common Errors
- presentation and style
- asked to use short document style
- use the style you're asked to use
- don't invent your own style
- times new roman, 12 pt. font
- header
- paragraph, no paragraph breaks other than an indent
- citations, references, notes
- word count must be accurate
- roughly 200 words per paragraph in research essay
- don't slip back and forth between past and present tense
- watch for run on sentences
- watch comas
- semi colons - used when you have two independent sentences that are said at the same time and are of equal importance
- run-ons - make clear connections between subjects and verbs
- syntax - fragments
- verb agreement
- vocabulary
- plagiarism
- word count, everything after the title, not including the bibliography

Assigning Week
- go to calendar
- Proposal meeting this coming week. arrive early to look at your group members work.
- due date for completed research essay is week 14
- exam is, as of now, in week 14

Informative Essay
- final essay should be 1500 words
- keep in mind it is not informative
- NOT persuasive
- short document dealing with information
-proposal, preliminary bibliography is worth 10% of final grade
- Final draft is worth 20%

Preliminary Bibliography
- most important
- it is a bibliography prior to writing the research essay
- APA style
- need to have 8-12 difference sources
- only two can be internet sources
- globe and mail isn't an internet service but it is on the internet
- internet source- blogs, websites
- use at least one periodical.
-periodicals are the best source
- easy to access
- can be found online
- periodicals contain fresh information
- look at the date of publication for relevance
- don't have to stick to these sources
- APA because it gives you a model and practice

Proposal
- short document style
- topic is open
- this is where you talk about your topic
- pick a topic you're interested in
- Need a thesis (first sentence, main part)
- to narrow your topic, think of why you picked it
- will have to do some research possibly in order to describe your topic.
- rhetorical questions can be present
- short paragraph (8 - 10 sentences)
- keep it brief but provide some detail

Topics:
- open but but has to be objective
- your opinion is not allowed and others opinions can not be used as evidence
- conspiracies are not good topics
- use existing material
- topics your passionate about can still be informative
- special effects in the movies was a good topic.
- make sure it's focussed

Toronto Public Library:
- get a library card
- a lot to access
- give you a pin number
- Fredrick Street

Proposal will take up to 3 hours to complete

Other Assignments
Journal #2
-not long answer
- what works and what doesn't work
- you'll be reading two articles (open discussion)
- 2 pieces:
The most offensive commercial ever produced
He is critical, analytical, provides context
and
A certain visionary once said

- if you don't know what something means, look it up
- the more familiar you are with the articles, the more smooth class will go
- dont rewrite the question
- answers should be clear from the topic sentence

Group Work
- finished piece should look like it was done by one person
- group of 4 - 6
- What is an APA annotated bibliography? google it
- be realistic about what you want to propose

How does he grade the process?
- use the forum
- all communication through the forum
- if you send an email, write that you've sent an email on the forum
