We discussed Essay Structures and Academic Integrity today.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Bring questions and concerns about writing essay style exams for next class.

1) ESSAY STRUCTURE-

INTRODUCTION: It should be shorter than your body paragraphs, include your controlling idea and be broad. You don't need a "hook" but it should be direct and easy to read.

BODY PARAGRAPHS: They should provide evidence for your controlling idea. They should also narrow your topic down from your introduction.

CONCLUSION: It should be the most specific piece of your essay. It narrows down your topic completely and "glues" your evidence together.

WORD COUNT: Paragraphs should be about 200-300 words for this essay. The conclusion should be the shortest piece within the entire essay.

2)ACADEMIC INTEGRITY-

INTEGRITY: this means "behaviour that defines your identity"

There are 2 different types of plagarism:

ACCIDENTAL: The student didn't intend to plagarize but because of sloppy work normally caused by procrastination, the student may have forgotten to cite a source, cite a source properly, etc.

DELIBERATE: The student was aware that they were plagerizing and "cut and pasted" work written by another author trying to pass it off as their work.

*It is better to hand in an unfinished paper than to get caught plargarizing!
