Most Common Errors - presentation and style - asked to use short document style - use the style you're asked to use - don't invent your own style - times new roman, 12 pt. font - header - paragraph, no paragraph breaks other than an indent - citations, references, notes - word count must be accurate - roughly 200 words per paragraph in research essay - don't slip back and forth between past and present tense - watch for run on sentences - watch comas - semi colons - used when you have two independent sentences that are said at the same time and are of equal importance - run-ons - make clear connections between subjects and verbs - syntax - fragments - verb agreement - vocabulary - plagiarism - word count, everything after the title, not including the bibliography
Assigning Week - go to calendar - Proposal meeting this coming week. arrive early to look at your group members work. - due date for completed research essay is week 14 - exam is, as of now, in week 14
Informative Essay - final essay should be 1500 words - keep in mind it is not informative - NOT persuasive - short document dealing with information -proposal, preliminary bibliography is worth 10% of final grade - Final draft is worth 20%
Preliminary Bibliography - most important - it is a bibliography prior to writing the research essay - APA style - need to have 8-12 difference sources - only two can be internet sources - globe and mail isn't an internet service but it is on the internet - internet source- blogs, websites - use at least one periodical. -periodicals are the best source - easy to access - can be found online - periodicals contain fresh information - look at the date of publication for relevance - don't have to stick to these sources - APA because it gives you a model and practice
Proposal - short document style - topic is open - this is where you talk about your topic - pick a topic you're interested in - Need a thesis (first sentence, main part) - to narrow your topic, think of why you picked it - will have to do some research possibly in order to describe your topic. - rhetorical questions can be present - short paragraph (8 - 10 sentences) - keep it brief but provide some detail
Topics: - open but but has to be objective - your opinion is not allowed and others opinions can not be used as evidence - conspiracies are not good topics - use existing material - topics your passionate about can still be informative - special effects in the movies was a good topic. - make sure it's focussed

Proposal will take up to 3 hours to complete
Other Assignments Journal #2 -not long answer - what works and what doesn't work - you'll be reading two articles (open discussion) - 2 pieces: The most offensive commercial ever produced He is critical, analytical, provides context and A certain visionary once said
- if you don't know what something means, look it up - the more familiar you are with the articles, the more smooth class will go - dont rewrite the question - answers should be clear from the topic sentence
